The Toronto Blue Jays experienced another close game slipping away on Wednesday, resulting in a series loss to the Houston Astros. A pivotal moment occurred in the top of the eighth inning when a pickoff attempt by Jeff Hoffman went awry, allowing Joey Loperfido to score for the Astros. This play contributed to the Blue Jays’ 3-1 defeat, bringing their season record to 39-41.
The game remained tight early on, largely due to the performance of Blue Jays starter Trey Yesavage. However, the eighth inning proved to be decisive when Loperfido hit a triple, and Hoffman’s subsequent pickoff attempt was thrown past third baseman Kazuma Okamoto, enabling Loperfido to reach home plate.
Despite facing Astros starter Mike Burrows, who entered Wednesday’s play with a high ERA among qualified big-league starters, the Blue Jays managed only one run on four hits. The lone run came from a solo home run by Nathan Lukes in the bottom of the first inning. Key players like George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had hitless nights. A late opportunity to tie the game was thwarted when Luis Urias was doubled off second base on a Springer fly ball.
Yesavage’s Performance and Command Issues
In his first-ever appearance against the Astros, Yesavage pitched 5.2 innings, allowing only one run. However, command issues, which have been a recurring theme for him this season, resurfaced. While Houston recorded only two hits against Yesavage, he issued five walks, forcing him to navigate out of trouble in all but one inning.
From a pitching arsenal perspective, Yesavage showed positive signs, frequently utilizing his slider. He generated 13 swinging strikes and recorded five strikeouts, demonstrating his ability to make batters miss. Despite these positives, Wednesday marked the third time in his last five starts that Yesavage has walked five or more batters, a trend the Blue Jays aim to address. This pattern not only risks big innings for the opposition but also increases Yesavage’s pitch count, preventing him from pitching deeper into games.
Yesavage threw a career-high 105 pitches on Wednesday before being relieved by Tommy Nance with two outs in the sixth inning.
Previous Game Against Houston
The series also saw a previous contest on Tuesday where the Astros defeated the Blue Jays 9-7 in 11 innings. In that game, Joey Loperfido hit a tiebreaking home run in the 11th inning off former Toronto teammate Braydon Fisher. The Blue Jays had intentionally walked Yordan Alvarez before Loperfido’s home run.
The Astros had a strong offensive showing in the fourth inning of Tuesday’s game, with Yainer Diaz, Cam Smith, and Taylor Trammell hitting consecutive home runs off Toronto starter Shane Bieber. This marked the first time the Astros had hit three consecutive homers since July 19, 2019.
Logan VanWey earned his first career win for the Astros, pitching two innings after giving up an RBI single to Kazuma Okamoto in the ninth. Okamoto had a productive game, going 3 for 4 with two walks and driving in three runs. Daulton Varsho and Luis Urias also contributed with two-run home runs for the Blue Jays, but the team left 13 runners stranded. Bieber, making his first start of the season after being activated off the injured list due to elbow inflammation, allowed four runs and nine hits, including the three home runs, in 3 2/3 innings. Blue Jays player Ernie Clement did not participate in Tuesday’s game due to a left hip issue.
Upcoming Schedule
The Blue Jays will continue their season-long effort to climb above the .500 mark as the Texas Rangers visit Toronto for a four-game series.
