Bosnia-Herzegovina defeats Qatar, boosts knockout stage hopes

Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-1 Qatar: Bosnia-Herzegovina boost hopes of reaching knockout stage

Bosnia-Herzegovina secures victory

Bosnia-Herzegovina defeated Qatar in their final Group B fixture, securing a 3-1 victory and enhancing their prospects of advancing to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time. The team finished with four points, level with Canada, but placed third in the group due to goal difference. This result means they did not automatically qualify for the last 32 but could still progress as one of the best eight third-placed teams in the tournament.

The match saw Bosnia-Herzegovina start with offensive intent. Early in the game, Ermedin Demirovic and Ivan Sunjic tested Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada with shots from a distance. The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute when Kerim Alajbegovic, at 18 years old, navigated past two defenders and unleashed a right-footed strike past Abunada.

Six minutes later, Bosnia-Herzegovina extended their lead. Their 40-year-old captain, Edin Dzeko, who was making his 150th appearance for his country, played a crucial role. His volleyed effort deflected off defender Sultan Al Brake and went past Abunada, resulting in an own goal. Dzeko, who holds the record for most goals and appearances for Bosnia-Herzegovina, nearly scored again four minutes later, but his shot hit the post.

Qatar managed to get on the scoreboard three minutes before halftime when captain Hassan Al-Haydos converted a cross from Edmilson Jr, halving the deficit. Pedro Miguel also hit the post for Qatar after receiving a pass from Akram Afif, as the Asian champions concluded the first half strongly.

Second half action and qualification implications

In the second half, Qatar continued to pose a threat on counter-attacks, with Akram Afif brushing the side-netting early on. Despite bringing on prolific scorer Almoez Ali for the final 20 minutes, Qatar lacked a decisive edge. Bosnia-Herzegovina maintained a strong defensive performance throughout the match.

The victory was sealed in the 80th minute when substitute Ermin Mahmic scored for the second consecutive game. He capitalized on a loose ball following a scramble in the Qatar box, slotting it past Abunada. This marked only Bosnia-Herzegovina’s second win in the World Cup, with their previous victory being a 3-1 win against Iran in their debut campaign in 2014.

Prior to this match, both teams had one point each in Group B, following a draw and a loss. Switzerland and co-hosts Canada were positioned above them with four points each. Bosnia-Herzegovina had previously lost 4-1 to Switzerland, while Qatar suffered a 6-0 defeat to Canada.

This was the first competitive encounter between the two nations, who had previously met twice in friendly matches, with Qatar winning 2-0 in 2000 and drawing 1-1 in 2010. Both teams were aiming to make history by reaching the round of 32 for the first time in their second World Cup appearance.

Manager Sergej Barbarez had emphasized the importance of the final group stage game, stating that his players would be ready. Bosnia-Herzegovina’s four-point tally is historically often sufficient for a third-place team to advance, but they must await the outcomes of other matches to confirm their progression. Qatar finished at the bottom of the group with one point.
