Bosnia and Herzegovina secures crucial World Cup victory over Qatar

Bosnia and Herzegovina boosts chances of advancing at World Cup with win over Qatar

Bosnia and Herzegovina secured a significant 3-1 victory over Qatar in a Group B match on Wednesday, enhancing their prospects of advancing in the World Cup. The win eliminated Qatar from the tournament and positioned Bosnia and Herzegovina favourably for the knockout stage.

This win is particularly notable as it places Bosnia and Herzegovina, who finished third in their group, in a strong position to qualify for the Round of 32. This expanded format of the tournament allows the eight best third-place finishers across the twelve groups to advance. Should they progress, it would mark a historic first for the national team, as their only prior World Cup appearance was in 2014 in Brazil.

First Half Dominance and Qatar’s Response

The scoring opened in the 29th minute when Kerim Alajbegovic, an 18-year-old, netted a goal from 20 yards out, firing past Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada. This made Alajbegovic the eighth-youngest scorer in World Cup history. His strike gave Bosnia and Herzegovina a lead they would maintain throughout the match.

Bosnia and Herzegovina extended their lead in the 34th minute. A cross from Sead Kolasinac was volleyed towards the middle by Edin Dzeko, which then deflected off Qatar’s Sultan Al-Brake, resulting in an own goal. This period saw Bosnia and Herzegovina dominating possession and creating further opportunities, with a shot from Basic being deflected over the bar shortly after the second goal.

Despite being down by two goals, Qatar managed to respond before halftime. Hassan Al Haydos scored in the 42nd minute, keeping his team competitive. This goal came after some defensive lapses from Bosnia and Herzegovina, allowing Qatar to get crosses into the six-yard box.

Second Half Action and Qualification Hopes

The second half saw continued action, with both teams creating chances. Early in the half, a pinpoint ball found Demirovic, who headed it towards Dzeko, but the header had too much power and went out for a goal kick. Qatar also had moments of pressure, winning a corner after a burst into the box from Afif, though it ultimately came to nothing.

Bosnia and Herzegovina solidified their lead once more in the 80th minute when Ermin Mahmic scored, bringing the score to 3-1. Mahmic had also previously scored in a 4-1 loss to Switzerland. The team’s performance in the second half, despite some nervous moments, was enough to secure the victory and the crucial three points.

The match was played in Seattle, where temperatures were noted to be around 28ºC (83ºF), adding to the challenge for the players. The Bosnia and Herzegovina players were seen celebrating on the pitch after the final whistle, confident that their third-place finish and the victory would be sufficient for them to advance to the knockout stage. The result puts them on four points with a -2 goal difference, which is considered a strong position for progression.

The win is a significant step for Bosnia and Herzegovina, as they aim to make their first-ever appearance in the knockout rounds of a World Cup.
