Clement’s Journey to All-Star Recognition
Ernie Clement, an infielder for the Toronto Blue Jays, has been named the American League’s starting second baseman for the upcoming All-Star Game. This selection follows a strong showing in the first round of balloting, where Clement garnered over three million votes, making him the leading vote-getter in the American League. His vote total was only slightly less than that received by Shohei Ohtani, a prominent player in the sport, and surpassed the votes for other notable players such as Aaron Judge, Mike Trout, Freddie Freeman, and Juan Soto.
Clement’s path to this recognition has been marked by perseverance. He reflected on his career, noting that he had been designated for assignment twice, released, and optioned multiple times. Despite these challenges, he emphasized his commitment to the game, stating that he “stuck around long enough to earn more and more opportunity.”
From Minor Leagues to Major League Impact
Clement’s journey with the Blue Jays began in 2023 when he signed a minor-league deal after being released by the Oakland Athletics. At the time, this move was characterized as a “pure depth move” given the Blue Jays’ existing roster of established players like Cavan Biggio and Santiago Espinal. Clement himself acknowledged that he joined the Blue Jays primarily because they offered a guarantee of regular starts in Triple-A.
His former bench coach with Cleveland, DeMarlo Hale, observed Clement’s dedication early in his career. Hale noted that Clement was always ready to play, regardless of the position or task, whether it was at second base, shortstop, left field, or third base, or performing duties like bunting, stealing bases, or pinch-hitting. Hale described Clement as a player who understood the necessity of doing “whatever it takes” to secure a role on a team.
During 2023, Clement received consistent playing time with Buffalo, the Blue Jays’ Triple-A affiliate. This period included focused drill work with hitting coach Matt Hague to improve his contact. After achieving a strong batting line over his first 145 Triple-A plate appearances, the Blue Jays called up Clement in late May when Espinal was sidelined with an injury. He continued to move between the majors and minors until late August, when an injury to Bo Bichette provided him with an opportunity to become the starting shortstop for two weeks during the team’s push for the post-season.
During this two-week span, Clement maintained a .366 batting average while demonstrating solid defensive play, which allowed him to remain with the major league team upon Bichette’s return. The following spring, facing a competitive battle for a bench spot, Clement recorded a 1.026 OPS with three home runs and minimal strikeouts over 63 swings. Blue Jays manager John Schneider commented that Clement “forced our hand” in earning a spot on the opening-day roster.
Clement’s Unique Playing Style and Fan Support
Since securing his spot on the opening-day roster in 2024, Clement has been a consistent presence for the Blue Jays. Only Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has appeared in more games for the team. Across MLB, only a limited number of players have appeared in more games, recorded more hits, or achieved a higher batting average. Additionally, very few players have struck out less often.
Clement’s playing style is characterized as a “throwback profile”—one that involves free-swinging, high-chase, high-contact, and a focus on putting the ball in play and running. This approach, which might have been highly valued in earlier eras of baseball, is less common in contemporary play. However, the Blue Jays have effectively integrated his skills over the past two seasons, utilizing him as a complementary piece at various points in their lineup, which is built around power hitters.
His performance in 2025 saw him achieve career-highs across various statistical categories. He also had a notable performance in October, where he had a strong showing in the post-season. Clement began 2026 by representing Team USA in the World Baseball Classic and maintained a strong batting average through mid-to-late June, also being among the league leaders in doubles. This progression illustrates how a utility player, who previously struggled to find a consistent role with other organizations, has become a key fixture and an All-Star for the Blue Jays.
The recent voting results for the 2026 MLB All-Star Game highlighted Clement’s significant fan support. While Shohei Ohtani led all players in votes, Clement’s strong showing in the American League positioned him as a close competitor, being only approximately 300,000 votes behind Ohtani. This surge in support for Clement was a topic of discussion among baseball analysts, who noted his standout performance during the Blue Jays’ World Series run last season.
Clement expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I love the game of baseball more than anything in the world. And I’m really fortunate to still be playing and still be sticking around here. I’m so grateful.”
