Mark Giordano, a former captain of the Calgary Flames, has been appointed as an assistant coach for the Toronto Marlies for the upcoming American Hockey League season. This move follows his previous advisory role within the organization. Giordano will join the coaching staff led by newly appointed head coach Steve Sullivan, working alongside goaltending coach Hannu Toivonen and video coach Nick Biamonte.
Giordano’s playing career with the Flames spanned 15 seasons, during which he appeared in 949 regular-season games, placing him third in franchise history for games played. He captained the team from 2013 to 2021, taking over the role from Jarome Iginla. Throughout his time in Calgary, he established himself as a prominent defenceman for the organization.
His tenure with the Flames concluded when he was selected by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft. He was named the inaugural captain for the Kraken before eventually joining the Toronto Maple Leafs. Giordano played three seasons with the Maple Leafs prior to announcing his retirement from professional hockey in 2024.
Giordano’s Distinguished Playing Career

In the 2018-19 season, he recorded his best offensive performance, tallying 17 goals and 57 assists for a total of 74 points, along with a plus-39 rating. The appointment of Giordano as assistant coach coincides with the return of Steve Sullivan as the head coach of the Toronto Marlies. Sullivan, who is 51, was previously an assistant coach with the Marlies before being elevated to the Maple Leafs on December 26, 2025. He initially joined the organization prior to the 2024-25 season.
Prior to his time in Toronto, Sullivan held the position of assistant general manager for the Arizona Coyotes from 2017 to 2021, where he oversaw the club’s AHL affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners. His experience also includes working in Arizona‘s hockey operations department as a development coach and later as director of player development.
As a player, Sullivan participated in 1,011 regular-season games over 16 seasons in the NHL, playing for teams such as New Jersey, Toronto, Chicago, Nashville, Pittsburgh, and Arizona. He also played 143 games in the American Hockey League, where he won a Calder Cup with the Albany River Rats in 1995 and appeared in two AHL All-Star Classics.
The new coaching structure for the Marlies aims to leverage the experience of both Sullivan and Giordano. Sullivan expressed confidence in Giordano’s capabilities, noting that he is an “elite hockey mind who will get a great opportunity to run the D and the PK.” This indicates that Giordano will play a significant role in developing the team’s defensive strategies and penalty kill units. The Marlies recently won the Calder Cup, and the organization is focused on maintaining strong alignment between its AHL and NHL teams to support player development.
Sullivan’s path to head coach involved a “long process” that included interviewing for the head coaching position with the Maple Leafs. Although he was not offered that role, the experience provided him with a broader perspective on team management. His prior relationship with John Chayka, who was his assistant general manager in Arizona for several years, played a role in his continued involvement with the organization.
The goal for the Marlies, as articulated by Sullivan, is to continue the vertical alignment from top to bottom within the organization. This approach ensures that the AHL team effectively supports the NHL team’s objective of winning a Stanley Cup. The development of players, both on and off the ice, is a key focus, recognizing that some players may require more time in the AHL to reach their full potential for the Maple Leafs.
