Kazuma Okamoto of the Toronto Blue Jays has achieved a significant milestone in his rookie season, hitting his 22nd home run of the year. This powerful three-run blast on Friday tied him with Shohei Ohtani for the most home runs hit by a Japanese-born rookie in Major League Baseball (MLB). The home run provided an immediate offensive boost for the Blue Jays in their game against the San Diego Padres.
Okamoto’s decisive hit came in the fifth inning, driving a 95-m.p.h. sinker from reliever Jhony Brito 377 feet over the left-field wall. This tie-breaking shot contributed to the Blue Jays’ 5-3 victory over the Padres, ending their three-game losing streak and marking the Padres’ 11th loss in 14 games. Mason Fluharty (4-0) earned the win for Toronto, while Louis Varland secured his 19th save of the season.
The Blue Jays had chased starting pitcher JP Sears (2-2) earlier in the fifth inning after singles and an out, with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. then hitting an RBI single against Brito. The Padres had initially taken a lead in the first inning with a two-run shot from Xander Bogaerts, his ninth home run, which broke a streak of 128 plate appearances without a homer. Toronto’s Shane Bieber allowed two runs and six hits over 4 2/3 innings in his fourth start of the season, having made his season debut on June 23 due to forearm fatigue.

This also marks the most home runs by a Toronto rookie in franchise history before the All-Star break. Okamoto previously hit his first grand slam on Wednesday in San Francisco.
Okamoto is now within reach of another team record, being just two home runs shy of tying the Blue Jays’ rookie record of 24 shots, set by Eric Hinske in 2002. His performance has placed him in rare company, and he continues to climb impressive lists in his inaugural MLB season. The all-time rookie home run record belongs to Pete Alonso, who hit 53 homers in 2019.

While Okamoto makes his mark, another Japanese rookie, Munetaka Murakami, rejoined the Chicago White Sox on Friday night.
