Toronto Blue Jays look to rebound against Red Sox after recent loss

Blue Jays, Cease look to bounce back from frustrating loss to Red Sox

The Toronto Blue Jays are set to face the Boston Red Sox, aiming to return to the win column after a recent defeat. The team will send right-hander Dylan Cease to the mound for the Saturday afternoon game at Fenway Park.

Toronto experienced a frustrating 6-4 loss to Boston on Friday, marking their fifth loss in six games and placing them 10 games under .500. The Blue Jays had initially shown signs of a comeback, erasing an early four-run deficit.

Friday’s game recap

In Friday’s matchup, Kazuma Okamoto contributed to the Blue Jays’ efforts with a three-run homer in the seventh inning. This marked his 23rd home run of the season, surpassing Shohei Ohtani for the most home runs by a Japanese-born rookie in MLB history.

However, the Blue Jays’ top relievers were unavailable late in the game. Manager John Schneider brought in rookie CJ Van Eyk with the score tied 4-4. Van Eyk allowed four of the five batters he faced to reach base, resulting in two runs scored by Boston.

Schneider acknowledged the challenge for young pitchers in such situations, stating that Fenway Park can be a difficult place to pitch in the eighth or ninth inning.

For the Red Sox, Anthony Seigler had a notable performance, leading off with a homer and achieving his first four-hit game in the majors. Romy Gonzalez broke an eighth-inning tie with an RBI double, contributing to Boston’s victory. Ceddanne Rafaela also hit a two-run home run in the third inning, which was confirmed after an umpire’s review.

Andruw Monasterio extended Boston’s lead with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Aroldis Chapman secured his 24th save of the season in the ninth inning, moving past Dennis Eckersley on the career saves list.

Pitching matchups and form

Cease, who has a 6-5 record with a 2.67 ERA, will look to improve on his last outing against the Tampa Bay Rays. In that game, he allowed five runs (three earned) over six innings in a 7-1 loss, surrendering two home runs for the first time since May.

Despite his recent performance, Cease has a 1.25 ERA in four appearances at Fenway Park. Earlier this season, he pitched five scoreless innings against the Red Sox in a 6-1 victory on June 16.

The Red Sox will counter with right-hander Sonny Gray, who has a 12-1 record with a 2.48 ERA. Gray has been in strong form, not having lost since April 14 and recording nine consecutive quality starts. In his last game against the Rays, he allowed one run over six innings.

Gray has a 2.99 ERA in 16 career appearances (15 starts) against Toronto. In his most recent start against the Blue Jays, Gray allowed one run over seven innings, though Boston ultimately lost that game 4-3.

The Blue Jays’ offence has struggled recently, scoring only 13 runs over their last seven games. Friday’s four-run output was only the second time the team has scored four or more runs in a game since returning from the All-Star break.

The game on Saturday is scheduled to begin with coverage starting at 3:30 p.m. ET.
