Yzerman’s Departure and New Role
Steve Yzerman has stepped down as the general manager of the Detroit Red Wings, transitioning into an advisory role for owner and CEO Chris Ilitch. This unexpected change occurred on Wednesday, following seven seasons in the general manager position where the team did not make any playoff appearances. Yzerman will continue to manage day-to-day operations until a successor is found.
Ilitch acknowledged Yzerman’s significant contributions to the franchise, stating that his lifetime involvement has been invaluable. He also noted that the organization is not currently meeting expectations. Yzerman, in turn, expressed his continued commitment to the Red Wings and the community, emphasizing his readiness to support the team in any capacity needed to achieve their goals.
Challenges During Yzerman’s Tenure
Yzerman took over as general manager, aiming to rebuild the team. Despite drafting players like Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider, and acquiring forward Alex DeBrincat, the Red Wings extended their playoff drought to a decade, which is the longest in the team’s history and currently the longest active drought in the NHL. The team concluded the most recent season with a challenging finish, including several losses in their final games, which raised questions about Yzerman’s leadership.
During his time, some of Yzerman’s decisions have drawn scrutiny. These include the trade of Tyler Bertuzzi to Boston and Filip Hronek to Vancouver for draft picks in March 2023. Another notable move was giving up a second-round pick to offload Jake Walman in a deal with San Jose. Additionally, the team’s captain, Dylan Larkin, reportedly requested a trade, with Minnesota, Florida, and Vegas initially on his list of preferred destinations. The player is under contract for five more seasons.
Key Personnel Decisions and Their Outcomes
Several of Yzerman’s personnel decisions at the professional level have been highlighted. One such move was the trade of Anthony Mantha in April 2021. Mantha, a former first-round pick, was traded for Jakub Vrána, Richard Pánik, and two draft picks. While initially perceived as a beneficial trade, Vrána and Pánik are no longer in the league, and the first-round pick acquired resulted in goaltender Sebastian Cossa, who made one career appearance for the Red Wings before being traded.
Another significant decision was the hiring of coach Derek Lalonde in June 2022. Lalonde, previously an assistant with the Tampa Bay Lightning, was Yzerman’s first coaching hire. The Red Wings missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons under Lalonde. Todd McLellan was then hired, and while results improved, the team still did not reach the playoffs.
The signing of J.T. Compher in July 2023 to a five-year deal was also a notable move. Compher initially performed well, but his production decreased in subsequent seasons, making his contract appear less favourable. Lastly, the trade for Justin Faulk in March 2026, which involved sending Justin Holl, prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov, and two 2026 draft picks to the St. Louis Blues, has also been questioned, particularly as the team’s performance declined after the acquisition.
The search for a new head of hockey operations is now underway, with the aim of building a championship-calibre organization that Detroit deserves.
