The Saskatchewan Roughriders are mourning the loss of team captain and linebacker Jayden Dalke, who died in a car accident on Saturday evening. The Canadian Football League (CFL) club announced the news on Sunday, noting that Dalke was killed while the team was on a bye week.
Dalke, originally from Leduc, Alta., was selected by the Roughriders in the sixth round of the 2022 CFL Draft after playing for the University of Alberta Golden Bears. He signed with the team in May 2022. The team cancelled a practice scheduled for Sunday following the announcement of his passing, ahead of their upcoming Thursday game against the Edmonton Elks.

The Roughriders released a statement describing Dalke as a “relentless warrior” on the field. His determination, toughness, and work ethic were noted as inspiring qualities for his teammates, who were deeply affected by his death. Dalke appeared in 68 career regular-season games, contributing 69 tackles, 31 special-teams tackles, three forced fumbles, an interception, and a sack. He played in all 18 regular-season games for Saskatchewan in a recent season, as well as the West final and the team’s Grey Cup win over the Montreal Alouettes.
Before his professional career, Dalke joined the University of Alberta Golden Bears in 2019 and was named an All-Canadian for the 2019 season. His professional football journey began in Edmonton, where he was a member of both the Edmonton Wildcats and the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
Tributes from across the CFL poured in following the news. Tommy Stevens, the Roughriders’ short-yardage quarterback, remembered Dalke as a great teammate and a best friend, cherishing their memories. Free-agent linebacker C.J. Avery, who won a Grey Cup alongside Dalke, described him as one of the most genuine people he had ever met, offering prayers to his family and friends.
The Edmonton Elks also expressed their sorrow, acknowledging Dalke as one of their city’s football products and stating that his loss would be felt throughout the Canadian football community. Dalke played 17 regular-season games for the Roughriders in a recent year and also participated in the Grey Cup.
