The Toronto Maple Leafs are undergoing significant changes within their front office, including the departure of Hayley Wickenheiser, Assistant General Manager of Player Development. Wickenheiser had been with the organization for eight seasons, initially joining as assistant director of player development in August 2018. She was promoted to assistant general manager in July 2022.
Wickenheiser confirmed her departure in a social media post, stating that the decision followed discussions with new Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka. She noted that while she expected to maintain a significant impact within the organization, it became clear that the new leadership group had a different vision.
During her tenure, Wickenheiser expressed pride in the work accomplished by the player development team. She thanked the individuals, coaches, management, and players she collaborated with over the years, wishing the team well and looking forward to her next chapter.
Additional Front Office Departures
Wickenheiser’s exit is part of a broader overhaul within the Maple Leafs’ front office. Other staff members who have reportedly parted ways with the club include Darryl Metcalf, Assistant General Manager, Hockey Research and Development; Mark Leach, Director of Amateur Scouting; and Dave Morrison, Senior Advisor of Player Personnel.
Morrison had a long history with the Maple Leafs, joining the organization in 2004. He served under multiple general managers and held various roles, including scout, Director of Amateur Scouting, Director of Pro Scouting, and Director of Player Personnel. During his time as Director of Amateur Scouting, he oversaw drafts that included players like William Nylander, Nazem Kadri, and Morgan Rielly.
Metcalf joined the team in 2014, initially as the Director of Hockey Research and Development, where he helped establish the club’s analytics department. He was later promoted to Special Assistant to General Manager Kyle Dubas in 2018 and then to Assistant General Manager of Hockey Research and Development in 2022.
Mark Leach, Director of Amateur Scouting, also departed. Leach had been with the Maple Leafs for two drafts, following previous tenures with the Dallas Stars and Detroit Red Wings. His first draft with Toronto included six selections, with the first pick, Tins Luc Koblar, showing early promise. The most recent draft, which saw the Maple Leafs select Gavin McKenna, occurred just weeks before Leach’s departure.
New Leadership and Organizational Changes
These changes follow the recent hirings of John Chayka as general manager and Mats Sundin, who have also brought in new personnel, including Judd Brackett as Assistant General Manager and Freddie Hamilton as Chief of Staff. The organization has also made changes to its NHL coaching staff and parts of its AHL staff, alongside player personnel moves.
General Manager Chayka issued a statement acknowledging the difficult decisions to part ways with valued colleagues as part of an ongoing organizational evaluation. He expressed gratitude for their contributions and wished them well for the future.
The departures of Morrison and Metcalf appear to be outright eliminations of their positions unless replacements are eventually named. Brackett may assume many of the responsibilities previously handled by Leach, though his hiring occurred only weeks before the most recent draft.
Wickenheiser’s distinguished playing career included leading Canada to four Olympic titles and seven world championships. She holds the record as Canada’s career points leader with 168 goals and 211 assists in 276 games.
The changes reflect a shift in direction for the Maple Leafs’ front office as new leadership takes shape following the recent appointments.
