According to reports, Paolo Maldini, the FIGC’s new technical director, and his advisor, Leonardo, travelled to Barcelona to meet with the former Manchester City manager. Their discussions with Guardiola spanned three days, during which they outlined their vision for the Italian national team. The FIGC’s outreach to Guardiola is part of a significant restructuring within Italian football, initiated after the national team’s failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.
Guardiola is currently without a coaching position for the first time in ten years. During his time at Manchester City, he secured 20 trophies and maintained a win ratio of 70.8 per cent. His achievements at the club include leading them to the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup treble in the 2022-23 season, a feat previously accomplished by Manchester United in 1999.
Guardiola’s Post-City Plans and International Interest
Despite the FIGC’s efforts, reports suggest that Guardiola’s initial conversation with the Italian federation was brief, lasting approximately one minute. This aligns with his previously stated intention to take a break from football after leaving Manchester City. Guardiola has indicated a desire to spend more time with his family, citing this as a primary reason for his decision to step back from club management.
He has previously expressed that he would not have the energy to immediately take on a similar club role in another country. However, Guardiola has shown interest in the challenge of international management, distinguishing it from the day-toto-day demands of club football. He mentioned in a 2024 interview that a national team role could be a different prospect.
In addition to Italy, three other national teams have reportedly contacted Guardiola. His interest in international management has been a recurring theme, with previous reports in 2024 suggesting a verbal agreement with the FA to potentially manage England. However, he ultimately chose to remain at Manchester City at that time.
