Air quality impacts local sports
Local sports activities in Guelph have been significantly affected by sudden air quality issues, leading to the cancellation of several programs. Organizations such as Guelph Minor Softball, Guelph Minor Baseball, and Guelph Soccer have announced the cancellation of their scheduled events for tonight, July 15.
David Frizzell, executive director for Guelph Soccer, confirmed that all of their programming for the evening has been cancelled. He also indicated that the organization plans to reassess the situation for Thursday, suggesting a day-by-day approach to the ongoing air quality concerns.
The cancellations extend across various youth sports, with Guelph Minor Softball calling off its house league games and Guelph Minor Baseball following suit. These decisions underscore a community-wide effort to prioritize the health and safety of participants amidst the current environmental conditions.
Widespread air quality warnings
The deteriorating air quality is attributed to smoke from wildfires burning in northwestern Ontario, according to Environment Canada. The national weather agency has issued an orange air quality warning for regions including Hamilton and much of southern Ontario, indicating poor air quality conditions that are expected to persist into Thursday.
In Hamilton, the situation is compounded by a concurrent heat warning, with temperatures anticipated to reach a high of 32 C on Wednesday, feeling more like 41 C with the humidex. These stifling conditions, combined with the smoky air, pose increased health risks for residents.
The air quality health index for Hamilton is forecast to reach a “high risk” level late on Wednesday and continue into Thursday. Residents have been advised to limit their time outdoors and consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor events, sports, and other activities to mitigate potential health impacts.
Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health has highlighted that certain demographics are more vulnerable to poor air quality, including young children and the elderly. Exposure to the smoke can lead to negative health effects on the heart and lungs. Common symptoms from smoke exposure may include eye, nose, and throat irritation, while more serious symptoms could involve wheezing, chest pains, or a severe cough.
Other groups particularly susceptible to the effects of wildfire smoke include pregnant individuals, infants, people with chronic illnesses or existing health conditions, and those whose work requires them to be outdoors. These individuals are strongly encouraged to reduce their outdoor exposure and seek medical attention if symptoms develop.
Community response and precautions
Beyond sports cancellations, communities are implementing broader measures to address the air quality concerns. The City of Cambridge, for instance, has closed its outdoor pools and moved some city-run programs, including summer camps, indoors. These changes are in effect until further notice to safeguard both residents and city staff.
Non-essential outdoor work has also been paused in Cambridge, though critical services are continuing. While outdoor parks, splash pads, and other outdoor amenities remain open, the city has made cooling centres available for those seeking relief from the conditions. Organizers of outdoor recreation bookings, such as sports fields and picnic areas, can proceed with activities if they deem conditions safe, with refunds available for cancellations due to air quality.
Residents across affected areas are being reminded to take precautions to reduce their exposure to smoke. This includes filtering indoor air, keeping windows and doors closed as much as possible, and wearing a mask when outside. Checking in on vulnerable individuals and staying indoors as much as possible are also recommended strategies.
The City of Cambridge is also advising against activities that can add indoor pollution, such as smoking or burning candles. Updates and air quality information are being provided through the city’s website as conditions are continuously monitored.
Environment Canada believes that conditions may improve by Friday.
