The 2026 NHL Draft featured significant activity, including musical performances, major trades, and numerous selections. The event began with Justin Bieber announcing the Toronto Maple Leafs’ selection, and continued with several notable transactions and draft picks that shaped the outlook for various teams.
Before the first overall pick, the Boston Bruins acquired JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth. The New York Rangers also made a move, securing pending-RFA Pavel Dorofeyev from Vegas and subsequently signing him to a new deal. Additionally, St. Louis completed a trade with Anaheim, bringing centre Mason McTavish to the Blues.
Sharks and Maple Leafs make key additions
The San Jose Sharks were a prominent team during the draft, moving up to the second overall pick. They further solidified their draft position by acquiring the ninth overall selection from Ottawa. This allowed them to select Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg second overall. Later, they drafted defenceman Keaton Verhoeff at the ninth spot. Verhoeff, a six-foot-four right-shooting defenceman, had been highly ranked at one point in the fall. The Sharks also added defenceman Ryan Lin at pick No. 21.
The Maple Leafs, who won the draft lottery in May, used their first overall pick to select Gavin McKenna. McKenna, an 18-year-old offensive talent, has been a projected top pick for several years.
The Seattle Kraken also had a significant pick, selecting Chase Reid at No. 7. Reid, a right-shot defenceman, played for the Soo Greyhounds and is expected to contribute offensively after his college career at Michigan State University.
The Winnipeg Jets, holding the eighth overall pick, selected Viggo Björck. Björck, a skilled Swedish player, became available after a series of defencemen were chosen between picks four and seven. The St. Louis Blues also focused on their centre position, drafting Tynan Lawrence with the 11th pick and acquiring McTavish from the Ducks using their other two first-round picks (Nos. 15 and 29).
Blackhawks miss first round, Eastern Conference strengthens
The Chicago Blackhawks did not make a selection in the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft. This marks the first time during the Kyle Davidson era that the team did not have a first-round pick. Their original fourth overall pick was traded to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Bowen Byram. The Blackhawks are scheduled to make two selections in the second round, at picks 34 and 37.
For the Blackhawks, the second round presents opportunities to address various positions. At centre, potential targets include Brooks Rogowski, Alessandro Di Iorio, and Rudolfs Berzkalns. On the wing, prospects such as Simas Ignatavicius, Casey Mutryn, Chase Harrington, and Mathis Preston could be considered. For defence, Xavier Villeneueve, William Hakansson, and Adam Goljer are among the players who might be available.
The Eastern Conference playoff picture appears to be intensifying. The Rangers acquired Pavel Dorofeyev, and the Maple Leafs secured the first overall pick. Other teams in the conference also made moves, with the Florida Panthers adding Brady Tkachuk and the Washington Capitals acquiring both Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch. Last season, 99 points were needed to qualify for the Eastern Conference playoffs.
