Canada’s Roster for the Showcase
The 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase in Windsor, Ontario, will feature 32 players from Canada, including Carson Carels and Keaton Verhoeff, both top 10 selections in the 2026 Upper Deck NHL Draft. The event, running from July 26-Aug. 1 at the WFCU Centre, serves as an initial evaluation for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Carson Carels, a defenceman selected sixth overall by the Calgary Flames, recorded one assist and averaged 10:12 of ice time in five games during Canada’s bronze medal win at the 2026 WJC. The 18-year-old tied for fourth among Western Hockey League defencemen last season with 73 points, consisting of 20 goals and 53 assists, in 58 games. He is set to play at the University of North Dakota this season.
Keaton Verhoeff, chosen ninth by the San Jose Sharks, contributed four assists and averaged 11:10 of ice time in five games at the 2026 WJC. The 18-year-old defenceman ranked fifth among freshmen in his position with 20 points, including six goals and 14 assists, in 36 games at North Dakota last season.
Eight players from Canada’s 2026 WJC roster will attend the camp. These include goaltender Jack Ivankovic (Nashville Predators), defenceman Cameron Reid (Predators), and forwards Braeden Cootes (Vancouver Canucks), Caleb Desnoyers (Utah Mammoth), Brady Martin (Predators), and Cole Reschny (Calgary Flames).
Seven Canadian players selected in the first round of the 2026 draft are also participating. Joining Carels and Verhoeff are forwards Caleb Malhotra (Canucks, third overall), Tynan Lawrence (St. Louis Blues, 11th overall), and Ethan Belchetz (Utah Mammoth, 17th overall). Defencemen Daxon Rudolph (Buffalo Sabres, fourth overall) and Ryan Lin (Sharks, 21st overall) will also be present.
Dimian Zhilkin, a forward projected as a first-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, is another notable attendee. The 17-year-old right wing recorded 75 points, with 36 goals and 39 assists, in 59 games last season for Saginaw in the Ontario Hockey League.
International Participation and Tournament Details
Alan Millar, general manager of the Canada national junior team, stated that the showcase offers an important opportunity to evaluate talented players against international competition and to build team identity. He expressed anticipation for the team’s performance and for bringing the event to Windsor for Canadian hockey fans.
Gavin McKenna, selected first overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2026 NHL Draft, is eligible for the 2027 WJC but was not invited to the camp. He finished second among all players at the 2026 WJC with 14 points, including four goals and 10 assists, in seven games. He also scored one goal in five games at the 2025 WJC.
Canada aims to win the WJC for the first time since 2023. The team secured a third-place finish at the 2026 tournament, following two consecutive fifth-place finishes.
Misha Donskov, who served as an assistant coach for the 2026 WJC team, will coach Canada at the showcase. The United States and Sweden, the winners of the 2026 WJC, have also released their rosters for the World Junior Summer Showcase.
Finland’s roster for the showcase includes defenceman Samu Alalauri (Chicago Blackhawks, 66th overall) and goaltender Juuso Ainasto (Maple Leafs, 85th overall), both selected in the first three rounds of the 2026 draft. Samu Alalauri was noted for his strong defensive play and confidence at the U-18s, while Elton Hermansson (Los Angeles Kings) from Sweden is recognized for his offensive generation.
The 2027 WJC is scheduled to take place in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, from December 26, 2026, to January 5, 2027. Canada will compete in Group A alongside Czechia, Latvia, Norway, and Switzerland, with preliminary-round games held at Rogers Place in Edmonton. Group B will feature Finland, Germany, Slovakia, Sweden, and the United States, with their preliminary-round games at the Marchant Crane Centrium in Red Deer.
