Montreal Canadiens general manager expected to prioritize patience in free agency

Wednesday Habs Headlines: Biding one’s time - Habs Eyes on the Prize

The Montreal Canadiens are expected to approach the upcoming free agency period with a focus on strategic acquisitions rather than immediate, high-profile signings. General Manager Kent Hughes has consistently emphasized patience in reshaping the organization, a philosophy that is anticipated to continue.

While some fans might hope for significant moves, reports suggest that Hughes is unlikely to make a major splash in the unrestricted free-agent market. This approach aligns with his track record of utilizing trades, drafting, and careful asset management to build the team.

Free Agency Landscape

The 2026 free agency class is described as historically weak, with a lack of impact players available. Many players who were expected to be free agents have already signed new contracts with their original teams or been involved in offseason trades. This situation, combined with a rising salary cap, could influence the types of free agents the Canadiens pursue.

The Canadiens currently have approximately $14.23 million in cap space, with several restricted free agents needing new contracts. This financial context further supports a cautious approach to the free-agent market.

Despite the challenging market, the Canadiens are still looking to address specific needs. The team is seeking a legitimate second-line centre to play alongside Ivan Demidov, a large and physical top-six winger who can score consistently, and a dependable right-shot top-four defenceman. An additional heavy, energetic forward is also on the shopping list.

Potential Targets and Strategic Considerations

Among the forwards, Mason Marchment is considered one of the top available players, which highlights the overall weakness of this year’s class. Marchment, who is 6’5″, split last season between the Seattle Kraken and Columbus Blue Jackets, recording 32 points in 39 games in Columbus. He is expected to be highly sought after, potentially driving up his asking price.

For the second-line centre position, Boone Jenner and Claude Giroux are mentioned as potential options. Jenner has played his entire 13-year career with the Columbus Blue Jackets and is known for his faceoff abilities. Giroux, 38, has spent the last four seasons with the Ottawa Senators, averaging just under 50 points per season over the past two years and maintaining a faceoff win percentage just under 60% during his time in Ottawa.

On defence, Jacob Trouba is noted for his physical play and heavy point shot. Andrew Peeke is another defensive option, described as a shutdown defenceman who effectively blocks lanes and wins battles along the boards.

Other forwards who could be considered include Anthony Mantha, who scored 33 goals in 81 games last season in Pittsburgh, and A.J. Greer, whose rights were recently traded to the Anaheim Ducks. Brandon Duhaime is also mentioned as a potential fourth-line addition due to his forechecking and physical play.

At centre, Jack Roslovic could be a short-term alternative, having produced multiple 20-goal seasons and winning over 53 percent of his faceoffs. However, the market for centres is notably thinner.

Hughes’s strategy suggests that the team’s biggest additions might come through well-timed trades rather than solely through July 1st signings, as opportunities are expected to continue presenting themselves throughout the summer until training camp opens.

In other league news, Zach Werenski vetoed a trade to the Dallas Stars, and Rick Bowness expressed surprise that Werenski was unwilling to sign another contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Florida Panthers acquired Jacob Markstrom from the New Jersey Devils. The Anaheim Ducks are signing A.J. Greer to a four-year contract with a $4.25 million cap hit. The New York Rangers have signed Pavel Dorofeyev to a seven-year, $77-million deal. Jeremy Lauzon is signing a six-year, $24 million extension with the Vegas Golden Knights, who also dealt Kaedan Korczak to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Parker Wotherspoon. The Utah Mammoth signed Sebastian Cossa to a two-year, $4-million total deal. The St. Louis Blues are waiving Jonathan Drouin for the purpose of buying out his contract.
