The Edmonton Oilers have concluded the era of defenceman Darnell Nurse, trading him to the San Jose Sharks. This move, which saw the Oilers offload Nurse’s contract without salary retention, was part of a busy period for general manager Stan Bowman.

Nurse, who was drafted seventh overall by Edmonton in 2013, played 798 regular-season games and 100 playoff games for the team. He had signed an eight-year, $74 million deal in 2021, a contract that became a frequent topic of discussion among fans and media. Nurse himself acknowledged that the high cap hit led to warranted criticisms of his play.

Key Acquisitions and Departures

In exchange for Nurse, the Oilers acquired defencemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and Zach Sharp from the Sharks. This trade created significant cap space for Edmonton, potentially freeing up as much as $8 million, depending on the cost to renew Mukhamadullin’s contract. Bowman emphasized the importance of moving Nurse without retaining any salary.

Andersen, a veteran of 13 NHL seasons, had a 3.05 goals-against average and an .874 save percentage in 35 regular-season games. He also contributed to a Stanley Cup championship with a 1.89 GAA and a .910 save percentage in 16 postseason games.

Further bolstering their roster, Edmonton acquired depth goalie Devon Levi from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a 2028 third-round pick, also receiving a 2028 seventh-round pick in the deal. Levi, once a top goalie prospect, played the past season with the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League. Bowman noted that netminder Tristan Jarry is expected to return next season.

The Oilers also added veteran depth winger Mathieu Joseph on a one-year, $1 million deal. Re-signings included winger Kasperi Kapanen to a one-year deal with a cap hit of $2.6 million and forward Max Jones at $850,000 per year. By the end of the day, Edmonton had 21 players signed with just over $7.4 million in cap space remaining.

Nurse’s departure marks the end of an era for the Oilers, where he accumulated 88 goals and 236 assists for 324 points in regular-season play. He also contributed 29 points (seven goals, 22 assists) in playoff games, including Edmonton’s two trips to the Stanley Cup Final in 2024 and 2025.

The Oilers believe they can achieve similar production by spending approximately 60% of Nurse’s $9.25 million cap hit. Both Mukhamadullin and Shea, who are left-handed defencemen like Nurse, are expected to absorb the 21 minutes of ice time Nurse leaves behind. However, Nurse’s role as an assistant captain and a core member of the leadership group means his absence will create a void that will need to be addressed over time.

Nurse, 31, facilitated the trade by expanding his three-team trade list to include the Sharks, reportedly the only interested party willing to take on his contract without salary retention from Edmonton. He had just seven goals and 24 points in 82 games during the 2025-26 season.

The timing of Nurse’s 2021 contract was influenced by the Oilers losing defencemen Oscar Klefbom and Adam Larsson, combined with other significant free-agent deals in the league at the time. This context led to the substantial contract that Nurse ultimately signed.

With $8.25 million still available, Bowman has the flexibility to pursue a goaltender upgrade and potentially carry additional cap space into the March Trade Deadline, when more players may become available.

Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks have also been active in free agency, adding defenceman Jacob Trouba, forward Mason Marchment, and goalie Eric Comrie.
